After noticing clear indicators of mental health concerns among physicians, a hospital reached out to CCA with concerns about the physicians’ well-being.
Understanding that physicians are often reluctant to contact internal support programs for help due to concerns around confidentiality and tend to be most comfortable speaking with their peers, CCA launched a peer coaching program for physicians, referred to in the hospital as the “Virtual Doctors’ Lounge.”
CCA clinicians with master’s or PhD credentials, clinical licensure, and at least 15 or more years of pertinent experience designed the program and oversaw setting up a system for tracking and reporting as well as recruiting and training peer coaches. They coordinated comprehensive peer training involving live, instructor-led training, written materials, and communications to peer coaches providing pertinent resources, and updates about the program. CCA’s clinicians also provide intake, connection to peer coaches, and backup support as well as referrals to specialized services and crisis intervention, as needed.
CCA helped the hospital establish a team of Physician “Champions” to help promote the peer coaching program and support the physicians.
